E-booklet & Video Series:
Talk the Walk

Published 14 August 2026

Leaders are often told to walk the talk. But when organisations face change, uncertainty or a future that does not yet exist, leaders must also be able to talk the walk: to communicate the thinking, values and direction behind the work in a way others can understand, trust and act on.

Created as part of the SGLN Fellowship 2026 Action Learning Project, Talk the Walk brings together conversations with Aileen Tan, Bahren Shaari and Sajen Aswani, three senior leaders with extensive experience leading across industries, organisations and markets.

Through a practical e-booklet and six accompanying videos, the resource explores three moments when leadership communication matters most:

  • Setting direction and vision
  • Anchoring teams through crisis and uncertainty
  • Driving change and transformation

It also examines Ethos, Pathos and Logos (the credibility of the speaker, the emotional connection with the listener and the logic of the argument) as practical foundations for communicating with impact.

How to Use This Resource

Begin with the e-booklet for the complete framework, leader insights and practical communication toolkit.

Read it from front to back once for an overview. After that, return to the sections most relevant to your next leadership conversation: the three pillars provide the vocabulary, the three leadership situations provide the context and the toolkit provides practical prompts for application.

You can then explore the six accompanying videos in sequence or select the topic most relevant to your current leadership context.

Explore by Leadership Situation

Leadership communication is tested most visibly at moments when people need direction, reassurance or a reason to move. These videos explore three crucible moments in which communication can define a leader’s impact.

(1)

Setting Direction & Vision

Explore how leaders articulate a future that does not yet exist, acknowledge the realities of the present and build conviction across the organisation before execution begins.

(2)

Anchoring Through Crisis & Uncertainty

Consider how leaders can remain steady without projecting false certainty, acknowledge what is not yet known, and commit to guiding their teams through the available options and trade-offs.

(3)

Driving Change & Transformation

Learn how leaders can communicate change with credibility and empathy, make the case for why change is necessary, and give people the space to process what they are being asked to leave behind.

Explore the Foundations of Effective Communication

The resource uses three classical modes of persuasion as a practical vocabulary for leadership communication. Effective leaders draw on one or more of these foundations depending on the situation and the needs of their audience.

(4)

Ethos: Building Credibility

Examine how trust is built through character, consistency and the alignment between a leader’s words and actions. Credibility comes from how values are lived, not simply from the title a leader holds.

(5)

Pathos: Connecting Emotionally

Explore how leaders listen, acknowledge the present and connect organisational purpose to the lived experiences of the people they are asking to follow.

(6)

Logos: Structuring Belief Through Logic and Evidence

Discover how leaders use a clear storyline, evidence, comparable examples and honest scenario planning to make a direction or decision understandable and credible.

The Leaders We Spoke With

Aileen Tan

GROUP CHIEF PEOPLE AND SUSTAINABILITY OFFICER, SINGTEL

Aileen Tan draws on more than 30 years of leadership experience across industries and regions. Her contributions to the resource focus on listening, emotional connection, difficult conversations and the people side of transformation.

Bahren Shaari

MEMBER, COUNCIL OF PRESIDENTIAL ADVISERS | FORMER CEO, BANK OF SINGAPORE

Bahren Shaari spent more than 30 years in banking and led Bank of Singapore from 2015 to 2022. His reflections examine calmness, narrative, personal communication and leadership through integration and uncertainty.

Sajen Aswani

DIRECTOR, TOLARAM

Sajen Aswani is a third-generation leader of Tolaram and served as Chief Executive from 2000 to 2024. His insights centre on values, long-term thinking, emerging markets, trust and the disciplined patience required to lead change.

The leaders featured in this resource are not trusted only because of what they say in the room. Their words carry weight because of what they have done before entering it: showing up through uncertainty, living their values when it is difficult and listening with the intent to understand.

Walking the talk builds credibility. Talking the walk is what a leader earns afterwards: the right to be believed when describing a future that others cannot yet see.
